Job Description
The Role
Are you a natural storyteller with a passion for sharing New Zealand’s unique cultural heritage? We’re looking for multiple enthusiastic, outgoing Tour Guides to join our Tio Ōhiwa Harbour Cruise & Oyster Experiences team, picking up shifts on an as-needed basis with competitive remuneration. In this role, you’ll lead engaging tours on the waka Kōtiti, guide oyster experiences on land, and introduce our visitors to the beauty and history of Ōhiwa Harbour.
Key Responsibilities:
Welcome and greet manuhiri (visitors) aboard Kōtiti for tours.
Conduct Māori and English karakia to enrich the cultural experience.
Lead a variety of tours, including harbour cruises, oyster processing tours, shucking experiences, and guided visits to Tauwhare Pā.
Familiarize guests with the history, layout, and culture of the region.
Promote Tio Ōhiwa’s kaupapa (purpose) and commitment to training and employing rangatahi (youth) from our community.
Encourage guests to stay sun-safe and hydrated for their comfort.
Suggest other local activities that may interest guests.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Previous experience as a tour guide is advantageous but not essential.
Strong storytelling and conversational skills.
Comfortable with Te Reo Māori greetings and pronunciation.
Friendly, outgoing, and perceptive to guests’ needs.
Ability to relate to people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Physically able to stand, walk, and handle outdoor conditions.
Open to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
Comfortable in front of a camera, as our tours are a popular photo-op for guests!
